My mother is one of my biggest supporters and always encourages me to live out my dreams.

When I heard about the challenges other girls face around the world, my dream became to make things better for them.

Unfortunately, many girls in developing countries never get the chance to live out their dreams.

One in seven girls in these countries is forced to marry before she’s 15 years old — robbing her of the chance to go to school, making her more vulnerable to violence, and putting her at risk for health complications.

MONITOR TOWNSHIP, MI — When the teachers at Mackensen Elementary stepped into the building on Monday, they were floored by the doors.

The doors to each of their classrooms had been decorated, expressing gratitude to the teacher for the hard work and support they give to the school, 5535 Dennis St.

The designs, different for each teacher, were part of Teacher Appreciation Week. Volunteers at the school spent Saturday putting up the decorations, which were made by a parent of a student in each teacher’s class. Rosie Detzler is the volunteer coordinator at Mackensen, said they planned the project for about five weeks and the teachers had no idea.

“Everything was done by volunteers,” Detzler said.

The payoff was Monday when the teachers came to the school. Some of the teachers were overcome with emotion when they saw the work done.

“It was very overwhelming,” said Maureen Taylor, a kindergarten teacher at the school. “After looking at it, I went into my room to compose myself.”

Total, the volunteers decorated 21 different doors in the school,

Dan Snover teaches fourth grade at the school and coaches little league. His door was covered in baseball themes, including logos of the Atlanta Braves, a team Snover spent three seasons with during his baseball career. He said he was “totally surprised” when he came in Monday.

“It makes you feel proud of what you’re doing,” Snover said.

Other designs included astronauts, flowers, soccer, bees and baking.

First grade teacher Tracy McMartin said they plan to keep the decorations up as long as possible.

“I don’t ever want to take them down,” McMartin said.

The Grand Secret of Dyslexia

The grand secret of dyslexia is that you make images of words and their meaning in your mind. Therefore you have the ability to create a physical manifestation of any word so it is meaningful for you. As Albert Einstein said: “Imagination trumps knowledge.”
For most dyslexics, the letters, words, and phrases are simply black marks on a piece of paper. Therefore they don’t have any meaning unless you assign meaning to them.

The good news is that there are five ways to make reading more meaningful to you

Strategy # 1 to Triumph Over Dyslexia: Make Clay Models of Letters

Clay has long been used by dyslexics to give meaning to words like ‘the’ ‘and’ and other words that have no physical meaning when they are first read.

It is necessary first to get the letters of the alphabet into a physical form that you can recognize. Use modeling clay to make large clay models of each of the letters of the alphabet, plus punctuation marks. Make models of capital letters first, in order, and then small letters next, in reverse order (the sequence of the letters is reversed, not the letter itself.) Feel the letters with your fingers, say the letters out loud, and feel them again and again, until you get a picture of that word in your mind and it becomes meaningful to you.

Strategy #2 to Triumph Over Dyslexia : Make Word Pictures

For example, draw a large duck quickly on an index card. It doesn’t matter how the duck looks. Your mind can make a perfect realistic picture of a duck when it sees what you have drawn.

Print the letters of the word “duck” quite large right on the picture of the duck (not under the duck, or near the duck, but literally right on the duck). Then hold the duck straight out in front of you with one hand and trace each of the large letters of the word “duck” with one of your fingers. Do this several times. Then print those same letters of the word “duck” on the back of your hand or bare forearm.

Holding the printed duck straight out in front again, look at it with “soft focus,” seeing the whole duck complete with printed letters on it, one picture, duck with word. Your mind will automatically “photograph” the duck (with embedded letters) together in one picture in the mind’s eye. It’s all one picture, duck/word, word/duck.

Close your eyes and see if you can still see (in your mind’s eye) the duck. If you can’t see the duck in your mind, just open your eyes and look at it again (“photograph” it again). Do this “refresher” look as many times as you need to in order to be able to see the duck when your eyes are closed.

If you can’t see the duck in your mind’s eye when your eyes are closed, just pretend that you are seeing the duck. It works just as well. To test yourself, put the printed “duck” picture out of your sight, and pretend it is out in front of you at eye level or higher. Look at your pretend picture of the printed duck, and copy the letters onto a blank sheet of paper. Compare with the original. If you make a mistake, good, good, good!

Strategy #3 to Triumph Over Dyslexia : Love Mistakes!

Learn to love mistakes! They are your friends. If the letters don’t come out right when you compare them with your original, then do something silly or funny with the erring letters. If a letter is missing, paint the letter in the original bright red with an imaginary paint brush, dipping it in an imaginary can of red paint. Or paint imaginary little furry lines on it to make it stand out. You “get it.” If a letter is out of its right order, draw an arrow on it to show the “lost one” the way to go. Repair mistakes in outrageous ways and your mind will love to remember the repair. If all else fails, burn the letters in with a hot branding iron. Imaginary of course!

Strategy #4 to Triumph Over Dyslexia: Be Calm and Alert

With physical labor, the harder you try, the better it works. With the brain, the harder you don’t try, the better it works!
Learn to calm yourself before trying to do mental tasks such as word recognition, or reading. Find any relaxation method that works for you. Pay attention to your breathing for example (take three deep breaths, letting each out with a long slow sigh). Make a fist, very tight, and say to yourself, “Open fist,” and clench all the tighter. Feel the tension all the way to your elbows. Then, without thinking, just let your hand fall to your lap and the fingers will fall open naturally. Relax.

Strategy #5 to Triumph Over Dyslexia: Energize the Body, Energize the Brain

A failing university student with dyslexia sat still in the library, concentrated hard, made great effort, and learned little. She put a “study table” (board) on top of the handlebars of her exercise bike at home. She peddled her way to success in university. She later learned to just pretend she was peddling her bike while sitting still in the library. She got studying success just cycling in her mind.

How To Find The Best Online Learning Sites For Kids

The best online learning sites help kids

develop reading, math and study skills

while at the same time minimizing the

time burden on parents.

Studies have shown that children who are not well above average in reading and math by grade 3 are unlikely to excel in school later on.

How can parents find the best online learning sites to help their kids academically during the elementary school years?

Parents have increasingly turned to online learning, and the best online learning sites are now available to families in their own home.

However, it’s important to select websites which will help your kids excel, and not just entertain them.

The 3 skills your child really needs to succeed in school:

1. Reading skills. Reading skills enable almost all other learning. Kids that fall behind in reading, will tend to stay behind, as they will not have the toolset to learn effectively.

2. Math skills. Math, far more than any other subject, builds upon itself. Counting leads to addition which leads to multiplication and so on. Poor numeracy skills lead to increasing struggles each year and development of “math anxieties”.

3. Study skills. This is the ability to focus, work independently and overcome challenges. The correlation between success in school and early “self-regulation” skills is well established.

The best online learning sites emphasise reading and math skills above all else, and allow young kids to work independently, thus helping to develop study skills.

Here is what you should be looking for in the best online learning sites:

1. Education or “edutainment”? The “educational” label is applied to countless games and sites with very marginal educational benefit. What percentage of the time is your child working on truly educational material? If it is under 75%, move on.

2. Personalized or one size fits all? The best online learning sites adopt their lessons to your child’s skill set, not vice versa. If a program only offers ‘grade level’ activities, think again.

3. Is student performance tracked? Good online tools tract each child’s performance from one day to the next so that a natural progression is maintained and reports are provided to parents.

4. Is the material curricula-based? The best online learning sites are based on nationally recognized curricula; this ensures that you’re not missing important areas.

5. Is the site focused on reading and math? If not, take a pass.

6. Can kids work independently? Young children should be able to start and complete lessons on their own. It builds self-esteem, study skills and will save you a lot of time. The best online learning sites have simple interfaces and good audio instructions.

7. Does the site automatically select lessons each day? Given the option, kids will often repeat “easy” or “fun” lessons that they have already mastered. As a parent, you do not want to have to micro-manage every study session. The best online learning sites will choose lessons automatically, based on student aptitudes and past performance.

8. Are the lessons interactive? Look for sites which allow students to interact with the content even at the tutorial stage.

9. Is feedback immediate and meaningful? The best online learning sites reinforce correct answers and quickly correct wrong answers with encouragement to try again.

10. Are lessons broken into short segments? Make sure the program is structured to deliver ‘bite-sized’ learning.

11. Are there too many distractions? Avoid programs with advertisements or an overabundance of unnecessary graphics.

The best online learning sites fit into your family’s lifestyle and time constraints.

Kids will only benefit from regular study over the long term.
